Texto para a Prova Trimestral de Inglês - Turma 21 - 3º Trimestre 2011

A Book Review
Sixty diverse teenagers from around the country have helped write a groundbreaking new book in which they offer advice and arresting insights to parents and other close adults.
Risk-taking, rules and expectations, privacy, parental breakups, and planning for the future are among the topics on which kids speak out in What We Can't Tell You: Teenagers Talk to the Adults in Their Lives (Next Generation Press, May 2005). In candid first-person accounts gathered by journalist Kathleen Cushman, they give straight-up assessments of what teenagers need from adults.
“My mom makes me feel like I have to learn from her mistakes − she doesn't even give me a chance to make any of my own”, says Tabitha, who lives in a small rural town. “She just flat-out says no.” Michael, an African-American teenager from St. Louis, warns, “What might not be a large issue to you could be a very large issue to your child. So don't say, 'Don't worry about it.' Don't act like it's nothing.”
Tensions about control or worries about their children's welfare can make it hard for parents to hear and empathize with their own teenagers, particularly when accusations fly in both directions. But this book opens a “back door” to new understanding, since the messages come from other people's kids. Even if their situations don't match up exactly, they can spark important conversations that otherwise might never happen.

From Adolescence to Adulthood

Becoming an adult is a fascinating journey. Even though most parents may find your inclination to question their values and decisions annoying, the road to adulthood is also full of joys, discoveries, and wonders.
You may often see your parents as suffocating when in reality they are trying to stop you from making a “bad” decision. The problem is that they have different priorities from you, hence a different logic. You want, for instance, to fit in with your peers, whereas your parents are focusing on the dangers to your health. This is why so many adolescents start smoking or drinking alcohol despite parental prohibitions or knowing that it is harmful to them.
It is a particularly difficult time. You are used to relying on the family for your physical and emotional needs, but it is now time to become an independent adult, establishing your own autonomy and identity. This can be quite a challenge as there are many goals that you need to achieve during this transition.
This search for identity and autonomy also includes your need for personal space. You spend more time in your room, and your parents worry about that. This is also a difficult time for them, as they can feel rejected. For single parents, it can be a very lonely time, especially if you have no brothers or sisters. Self-esteem is also an important issue. You know your attributes but have also become aware of your shortcomings. This is a time when looking at who you really are versus your ideal of who would like to be can make you very unhappy. What you have to do now is to accept your real self.
Your relationship with your family changes because it grows in depth and maturity. If you handle your conflicts well, you will end up more strongly and more maturely attached to them.
Finally there are the parting experiences that you inevitably go through. As you finish your secondary education you get that bittersweet feeling. It’s an ending to a lifestyle you have grown to know and there are many things and people you will miss. However, it’s a time to explore a different way of life with more independence and a better appreciation for those who have taken care of you for so long. The opportunities are endless.

Passage House

Passage House is a safe haven for girls who are at risk of ending up living on the streets. They usually come from the poorest slum areas in and around the cities of Recife and Olinda, where violence and abuse are common. Passage House runs a comprehensive programme, offering counselling, healthcare, nutritious meals and a space for girls to grow and develop.
The centre is situated in the centre of Recife and offers 100 places for girls aged between seven and 17. Most of the girls have either lived or are at risk of living on the streets, while many have suffered abuse or exploitation.
On joining the centre, the girls have a full health check and psychological assessment. Many join with severe behavioural problems and aggressive attitudes. These are addressed immediately so as not to disrupt other members. After two weeks, the girls have to make a decision about whether they want to stay on permanently. As soon as a commitment is made, the girls must agree to adhere to the rules of good behaviour – no fighting and respect for one another. Passage House breaks down usual teacher-student hierarchies and offers a safe and loving space where equals can share their problems and overcome them together.
A prerequisite of Passage House is that all girls attend school. After lunch they queue up to collect their bus ticket to get them to school in the afternoon. The mornings are spent taking part in a number of activities, including dance, theatre, art, sports and counselling for both them and their families. Parents are encouraged to visit, as staff at Passage House are keen to educate families and communities in the fight to break the mental and physical cycles of abuse that can exist in poor communities, often as a result of addiction to drugs or alcohol.

“Me arrepender, eu me arrependi.

E seguir minha vida” diz a menina.

Cenas provocantes

As visualizações vão cair.
