Texto para a Prova Trimestral de Inglês - Turma 31 - 3º Trimestre 2011

From Adolescence to Adulthood

Becoming an adult is a fascinating journey. Even though most parents may find your inclination to question their values and decisions annoying, the road to adulthood is also full of joys, discoveries, and wonders.
You may often see your parents as suffocating when in reality they are trying to stop you from making a “bad” decision. The problem is that they have different priorities from you, hence a different logic. You want, for instance, to fit in with your peers, whereas your parents are focusing on the dangers to your health. This is why so many adolescents start smoking or drinking alcohol despite parental prohibitions or knowing that it is harmful to them.
It is a particularly difficult time. You are used to relying on the family for your physical and emotional needs, but it is now time to become an independent adult, establishing your own autonomy and identity. This can be quite a challenge as there are many goals that you need to achieve during this transition.
This search for identity and autonomy also includes your need for personal space. You spend more time in your room, and your parents worry about that. This is also a difficult time for them, as they can feel rejected. For single parents, it can be a very lonely time, especially if you have no brothers or sisters. Self-esteem is also an important issue. You know your attributes but have also become aware of your shortcomings. This is a time when looking at who you really are versus your ideal of who would like to be can make you very unhappy. What you have to do now is to accept your real self.
Your relationship with your family changes because it grows in depth and maturity. If you handle your conflicts well, you will end up more strongly and more maturely attached to them.
Finally there are the parting experiences that you inevitably go through. As you finish your secondary education you get that bittersweet feeling. It’s an ending to a lifestyle you have grown to know and there are many things and people you will miss. However, it’s a time to explore a different way of life with more independence and a better appreciation for those who have taken care of you for so long. The opportunities are endless.
