Texto para a Prova Trimestral de Inglês - Turmas 12 e 13 - 3º Trimestre 2011

Passage House

Passage House is a safe haven for girls who are at risk of ending up living on the streets. They usually come from the poorest slum areas in and around the cities of Recife and Olinda, where violence and abuse are common. Passage House runs a comprehensive programme, offering counselling, healthcare, nutritious meals and a space for girls to grow and develop.
The centre is situated in the centre of Recife and offers 100 places for girls aged between seven and 17. Most of the girls have either lived or are at risk of living on the streets, while many have suffered abuse or exploitation.
On joining the centre, the girls have a full health check and psychological assessment. Many join with severe behavioural problems and aggressive attitudes. These are addressed immediately so as not to disrupt other members. After two weeks, the girls have to make a decision about whether they want to stay on permanently. As soon as a commitment is made, the girls must agree to adhere to the rules of good behaviour – no fighting and respect for one another. Passage House breaks down usual teacher-student hierarchies and offers a safe and loving space where equals can share their problems and overcome them together.
A prerequisite of Passage House is that all girls attend school. After lunch they queue up to collect their bus ticket to get them to school in the afternoon. The mornings are spent taking part in a number of activities, including dance, theatre, art, sports and counselling for both them and their families. Parents are encouraged to visit, as staff at Passage House are keen to educate families and communities in the fight to break the mental and physical cycles of abuse that can exist in poor communities, often as a result of addiction to drugs or alcohol.
